Chimney Sweeps over the West End….

Sticking with the Mary Poppins theme, I also got to see the new stage production that was brought to London last year. It replaced Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre last summer, and after seeing Aladdin,(which I also posted about), I wasn’t sure if Mary Poppins was the right choice to move in next, although the story is enjoyable and I love the movie, I wasn’t sure there was a lot they could do with it, effects wise, that would be as memorizing as Aladdin was.

I’m happy to say that I was wrong, the play was brilliantly done, with the change in sets being done seamlessly and in a unique way, such as the Banks’ house which appeared like a doll’s house to show us the different rooms all at once.

Of course the musical numbers were great as well, adding scenes from both the film and original books to add new songs along with the familiar ones. Of course the ‘Step in Time’ choreography was amazingly done but the showstopper was of course, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’, not only because it is the much-loved song from the Disney movie but they add extra rounds for the audience to join in. Also it gets extra praise for being such a difficult, tongue twister especially when singing it, live, most nights, and some days twice, deserves to be recognised as one of the highlights of the show.

The show has been done very well and I would highly recommend booking, (when the theatres are open again), if you are a musical or Disney fan, especially as the performance doesn’t just bring to life your favourite parts of the movie but also includes elements of the original story by P. L. Travers entwined seamlessly with the more familiar scenes.

I was lucky enough to see a few shows last year, (there might be a post on those later), but unfortunately have yet to see anything this year with the current global situation, I was due to see two the same week lockdown was put in place in the UK. Although his was a shame, it is understandable that the health and wellbeing of everyone is more important and means the first show I do see when it is safe for theatres to reopen will be even more special as it will be appreciated on a new level.

Aladdin the Musical

DSCN0284Back in August I was lucky enough to see Aladdin in London and was absolutely blown away by the production. The set design and costumes were amazing. I was worried that the part of Genie wouldn’t meet the standards of Robin Williams’ comic timing but the songs and dance numbers really added to the character and weaving in jokes about current events gave the show a personal touch.

DSCN0286Without a doubt Genie’s ‘Friend like me’ scene was fantastic but the real show stopper was the flying carpet sequence during ‘A whole new world’ which was stunningly portrayed on stage

The whole show was amazing and Disney have really shown that they can transition from film to stage, with The Lion King being another major hit, I jut hope they bring more to the West End!

January Favourites….

If you’ve read my last post then you’ll know I was lucky enough to get my hands on tickets to the new Harry Potter stage show. It was one of the best shows I’ve seen on stage and even though the plot is a little lacking the show more than makes up for it!

I also planned a baking day with a friend from work and her children who have discovered the magic of Harry Potter, one of the things I loved making was these sorting cupcakes, each filled with different coloured frosting so when you’d bitten into eat you would be ‘sorted’ into the assorted Hogwarts house.

I managed to catch La La Land at the cinema and even though those I went with didn’t enjoy it, I could see what all the hype was about! It was bittersweet and some what nostalgic, (maybe due to the jazz and hints of old Hollywood), as well as a great take on musicals I found it a great feel good movie and Stone and Gosling were perfect together.

la-la-land

I didn’t get up to much this month as I was back to work and have been busy looking for a new job, as my current position is coming to an end soon but can’t wait to see what’s in store for February….

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child….

Yes it happened! After continuously trying and failing to get tickets seen the first release I finally did it.

These tickets have been so difficult to get, but at the beginning of January I was checking the sight for any last minute ones and actually found some for that month! The seats were brilliant, (in the stalls and roughly 10 rows from the front), and were on the pricey side but was totally worth it.

So without revealing ‘the secrets’ here’s the best bits to look out for….

  • Special Effects and Choreography- mesmerising to watch and helped make this 4 hour+ story feel fast paced and action packed.
  • Actors Anthony Boyle,(Scorpius Malfoy), and Paul Thornley,(Ron Weasley), played both their parts amazingly, Thornley captured the essence of Ron brilliantly and Boyle stole the show for me as the awkward and geeky son of Draco,
  • Dementors-  These soul sucking creatures make an appearance and cast an awful, eerie feel, more terrifying than in the film.

  • Scorpius Malfoy- My firm favourite since reading the play and now perfected by Boyle’s performance. He is awkward, vulnerable, nerdy and hilarious. Also he has the best lines, (see below), to turn most serious situations light hearted.

This is an absolute must for any Potter fan, and I would happily re-watch it as many times as I have the films!
